Benchmarking Jam

Building professionals often say, “you can’t manage what you can’t measure.” This high-energy jam session helps you do just that – measure, monitor and manage building energy and water performance. Working in teams with volunteer energy managers and engineers, utility data is entered and verified using ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager. Teams identify projects eligible for ENERGY STAR certification and strategies for increased performance and decreased utility bills.

This jam session supports community organizations and companies to input and verify their energy and water performance data with the help of volunteer professionals and ENERGY STAR’s Portfolio Manager. Benchmarking Jams are part of the U.S. Green Building Council’s ADVANCE program to meet organizations and communities wherever they are on the path to sustainability and assist them along that path. Energy Alabama is proud to be a partner with USGBC on this effort.


  1. Establish an account in ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® and enter information about your building(s) and at least one year of energy and water use data.
  2. Analyze your energy and water use to identify opportunities for increased performance
  3. Determine eligibility to achieve ENERGY STAR® certification
  4. Set clear performance goals in ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager® for your buildings’ energy and water use.

What is Energy Benchmarking?

Energy benchmarking is the process of measuring how much energy your building consumes, and comparing your energy performance to similar buildings. Benchmarking is the first step toward saving energy and money!

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR Portfolio Manager is an online, interactive energy management tool that allows you to measure and track your building’s energy and water consumption, identify investment priorities, and verify improvements over time.

In order for this event to be a success, each building representative should bring:

  • Laptop or Tablet
  • The building street address, year built, and contact information.
  • 12 consecutive months of utility bills for all fuel types used in the building.  You will need the number of units of each energy type used, not just the dollar amount of the utility fee. Historical energy use data can be downloaded on the Huntsville Utilities website with an online account.

  • Percent of floor area that is cooled in 10% increments (10%, 20%, 30%, etc)
  • Percent of floor area that is heated in 10% increments (10%, 20%, 30%, etc)
